  • In terms of the practice of eating insects, insects are consumed across several Indian states for generations, especially in North East India like Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, where insects are eaten seasonally and sold in markets like Dimapur's Mava market.
  • Insects sold at the Mela were:
    • Cricket cookies
    • Chili garlic crickets
    • Fried silk worms - tasting like overcooked kidney beans

Source of Protein - High proportion of body mass, edible

  • Insects are an efficient source of calories and proteins.
  • Edible insects are also a sustainable alternative protein source.
  • Many insect species are rich in protein, vitamins, and micronutrients, with a much higher proportion of their body mass being edible (around 80% compared to 55% of the poultry).
  • They also require significantly less land and water and feed to produce the same amount of protein.
  • Cost effective to produce with low environmental impact.

Urbanisation distances from cultural practice

The organization has created both physical and cultural distance from such practices. Younger generations, grown up or settled in the cities, are unaware that insects are eaten across several parts of the country.

Seen as rural practice

It is also seen as belonging to rural communities rather than to urban food cultures. Eating insects became less about nutrition and more about class, as it did not fit into the dominant ideas of modern and aspirational food.

Need for standardized protocols

Establishing standardized rearing protocols allows insects to be produced at a scale rather than harvested from the wild, reducing pressure on natural populations while ensuring consistency, safety, and nutritional quality.
