• In the 12 months ending in June, the world’s average temperature was the highest on record for any such period, at 1.64 degrees Celsius above the average in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period

  • The natural El Nino phenomenon, which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to raise global average temperatures.

  • More than 1,000 people died in fierce heat during the haj pilgrimage last month. Heat deaths were recorded in New Dehli, which endured an unprecedentedly long heatwave, and amongst Greek tourists.

there is an approximately 95% chance that 2024 beats 2023 to be the warmest year since global surface temperature records began in the mid-1800s

  • Every month since June 2023 – 13 months in a row – has ranked as the planet’s hottest since records began, compared with the corresponding month in previous years

The world recorded the first year of temperatures above 1.5C over pre-industrial levels, and is transitioning towards significantly higher temperatures

Based on our emissions trajectories, we are going through the 1.5°C global warming transition in 2020-2040.

North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia have broken seasonal temperatures and drought records in multiple countries, which also faced subsequent floods.

India, there is expected to be more extreme weather, leading to widespread floods and heatwaves.

Extreme Temperature surge in North pole

  • Temperatures at the north pole soared more than 20 degree Celsius above average , surpassing the melting threshold for ice.
  • Classified this as an extreme winter warming event, although not the most severe ever recorded.
  • The primary driver for this event is the deep low pressure system over Iceland, which funneled warm air from lower latitudes into the arctic.

7 years ago, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, predicted that the world wouldn't warm 1.5 degrees celsius above preindustrial level until 2040. 1

2 years ago, the group predicted the world would pass that threshold between 2030 and 2035.

Now, new data from the World Meteorological Organisation released wednesday, indicated that Earth will cross this point in just 2 years. 1

Melting of arctic ice, wide scale collapse of coral reefs, greenhouse gas emissions rising, combined with hotter conditions driven by El Nino weather pattern contributes to this change.

Scientists discussed Geengineering, that is deliberately cooling planet, for example by injecting aerosols into the atmosphere.

2027 is likely to be the first year where that long term average temperature is over limit. 1

Some countries put faith behind the concept called "'Overshoot" - means the world could pass 1.5 degrees celsius, then later on remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to bring temperatures back down.
