Indian Steel Output Touches 150 Million Tonnes / Year

  • With the January 2025 data from https://worldsteel.org/media/press-releases/2025/january-2025-crude-steel-production/ , it is official - India hit 150MT of steel output for a 12 month period (Feb 2024 - Jan 2025).

  • Jan-Dec 2024 was just under this mark, at 149.60MT, but the first month of 2025 saw this milestone officially.

  • India is the only third country ever to hit this milestone. Of these only two of them still remain. Listed by country and year achieved:

  • USSR : 1988

  • China : 2001

  • India : 2025

  • What about the US ? Japan ? Germany ? UK ? Not even during the peak of the world wars and post war boom years ?

  • No. The US maximum was 139MT in 1973 at the peak of the steel boom. Japan peaked at 125MT a year later.

India wasn't always a major steel producer. In fact it only produced 25MT at the turn of the century. It now produces 6X that figure 25 years later.

India has only a third of US and Chinese land area. There's a more limited amount space to build stuff in.

Within those constraints, it is by a distance the second largest producer of several major core items from steel to cement to aluminium.

Unlike China, a major part of whose core sector output feeds an export engine and is therefore essentially 'offshored' steel production, India is not such a major manufactured goods exporter.

Rather, the growth in steel output - especially the dramatic rise in the 2020s - is a proxy for the intensity of the infrastructure and manufacturing growth that is currently happening.

With a likely 160MT this year, India looks set to cross 200MT in steel output before the end of the decade.

World's 2nd largest mobile manufacturer

  • From 2 units in 2014 to 300+ operational units today.
  • 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are now locally manufactured.
  • Manufacturing value: ₹4,22,000 Cr;
  • Exports: ₹1,29,000 Cr (2024).
  • ‘Make in India’ boosted production of chargers, battery packs, camera & display modules.
  • India is now focusing on semiconductor chips & advanced components to deepen the manufacturing value chain.
