Challenge in tackling climate change
Operationalising global cooperation towards a common cause even when national interests don’t align with it.
Bharat's committment
Achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070
Why net zero?
The world must keep the global average annual surface temperature rise to within 1.5 degree celcius above pre industrial levels The current increase is atleast 1.1degree celcius over that in 1880 6th Assessment report of the UN IPCC - from 2020, the remaining global carbon budget for a 50 - 67 % chance of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degree C is 400 - 500 billion tonnes (Gt) of CO2. Currently, annual global emissions are around 40GtCO2 This means, net global emissions must drop drastically to stay within carbon budget
World Inequality Database
Per capita emissions of th richest 10% are 20 times greater than that of the poorest 10% In absolute terms, almost half of the country's total
Surge in demand
The power demand could increase nine to ten fold by 2070 To meet it entirely via renewable energy will require more than 5,500GW of solar and 1,500GW of wind, while the current capacity is 70GW solar and 47GW wind
Hurdle in renewable energy expansion
Going beyond 3,500GW of solar and 900GW of wind will demand considerable land trade offs
Mitigation measures
Incorporating Sufficiency consumption corridors Demand side -
- Use of better construction materials
- passive design elements to provide thermal comfort that doesnt require air conditioning
- energy efficient appliances
- public or non motorised transport
- local products to reduce the demand for long haul freight, mindful dietary choices
- alternative fuels in industries
Launch of a Global alliance to combat poverty and hunger
supported by at least 80 nations.
Eating meat and dairy causes 20% emissions
❗️COP29: "When we eat meat and dairy, this is causing 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions, so it's damaging a lot of things in the world."
‼️ Do anything with meat but dairy products are necessary for humans.
❓ How does dairy products cause greenhouse effect?
Brits should stop taking meat - PM Keir Starmer
India's stance
❗️Too little, too distant: India rejects $300 bn climate finance at COP29
Developed countries, which have historically been responsible for most of the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, are required to provide finance, technology, and capacity-building support to developing and low-income economies to help them cope with a warming world.
