December 2023

Loksabha passes Indian Telecommunication bill, 2023.

The law includes provision to restrict Internet freedom across country.

However, The law includes a provision mandating biometric identification by telecom companies (telcos) before issuing SIM cards to consumers

The draft legislation additionally proposes to bring OTT or internet-based calling and messaging apps under the definition of telecommunications and grants the government the power to waive fees, penalties, etc., for the benefit of consumers and competition

However, there is a provision for checks and balances too, as unlawful interception of messages may lead to imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs. 2 crore, or both. How far this would apply to the "national security" issue is anyone's guess.

NO OPPOSITION VOICE

The bill was passed during a session with significant absence from the opposition, with 144 MPs suspended and the debate on the bill lasting only 63 minutes.
